When “Pancakes” Replace “Bliny”: A Guide for Russian-Speaking Parents
“- Masha, let’s go make bliny? – you say to your child.” “- What? – you hear in response.”
It’s a moment that sends a chill down the spine of many Russian-speaking parents. You suddenly realize that English has quietly taken over, and your child’s world no longer has bliny, only “pancakes.” How do you communicate with them now? Only in English? And how do you explain to Grandma and Grandpa that they can no longer chat with their granddaughter in their native language?
This is a common fear, but it’s not an unsolvable problem. The key is creating a living, breathing language environment. At the Bilingvi Russian Language Center, we’ve built our entire philosophy around this concept. For us, Russian isn’t just a subject to be studied; it’s the language of communication. It’s the language children need to trade a toy, to explain the rules of a board game, or to share their excitement about a book they’ve just read.

Behind this immersive environment is a dedicated Bilingvi team. Our classes, designed for everyone from 10-month-old toddlers in “Grechka Club” to students in Grade 8, are led by professional pedagogues and linguists. We make language “living, close, and warm” by rejecting boring drills. Instead, we start from the child’s interests. We might learn grammar rules while cooking borscht, completing a quest, or painting a masterpiece on the wall. We use modern materials and a play-based approach so that children are always engaged. And when school holidays come, our legendary language camps—each with a unique theme—turn learning into an unforgettable adventure.
Of course, this journey is a partnership. What happens at our center can be beautifully supported by what you do at home. For a bilingual child, books are a magical bridge between languages and cultures. Here are a few tips from our teachers to help turn reading into a joyful and beneficial ritual:
- Read aloud with emotion. Your intonation, gestures, and facial expressions help your child feel the language and remember new words.
- Discuss the pictures. Even toddlers can answer simple questions: “Who is that?”, “What is he doing?”, “What color is Masha’s dress?”
- Ask questions about the plot. Let your child try to predict events: “What do you think will happen next?” This develops both their thinking and their speech.
- Give your child a role. Let them be in charge of turning the pages or saying a familiar character’s catchphrase.
- Re-read favorite stories. Repetition is key for language acquisition, and children find comfort and confidence in the familiar.
Reading isn’t just about language development; it’s about sharing warm, close moments together. Even 10-15 minutes of daily reading will make a significant difference. At Bilingvi, children don’t just learn Russian; they live in it. Soon, parents notice their child speaking Russian more often, with a growing vocabulary to express all their complex thoughts and feelings.
